RICK KILBURN BIOGRAPHYMusician, composer, award-winning producer, engineer and educator. Rick Kilburn can lay claim to all of the above. Born and raised in a musical family in Vancouver, B.C., Kilburn grew up listening to and playing Jazz. He attended the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, 1973/74 and from there moved to New York, where he worked as a bassist with such diverse players as Dave Brubeck, Mose Allison, Airto, Flora Purim and Chet Baker. Paul Desmond said, "Yah that Rick sure can play!" After eight years in New York, Kilburn returned to the west coast of British Columbia. He taught bass and improvisation at Malaspina College on Vancouver Island from 1983 to '86 and started his first production company, creating jingles and sound tracks for radio, television and film. Kilburn joined the faculty at Vancouver Community College in 1987, teaching bass and master classes, as well as developing a course in demo production and giving workshops in recording. From 1990 to '95, he was on the faculty of the Jazz Workshop at the Banff Center for the Arts, originating and developing the audio workshop portion of the program that attracts engineers from around the world. Audio participants receive hands on experience in live sound reinforcement, microphone techniques, recording and mixing. Since 1993 Rick Kilburn has successfully run his production company "XNTRiK Productions" along with it's it's production facility. In 1998 Rick formed the company "Cole Music International Inc." A full service music production company for C.D. Production, Sound for film and composition/arranging services for all music related undertakings.He also built and run's "Cole Music International's" recording facility called "Riverside Recording." In the past decade, Kilburn has produced over 100 Album projects, released on many different labels as well as independents. He has been involved with two Juno award winning projects, both with the Hugh Fraser quintet. "Looking Up" and "In The Mean Time". CARAS - West Coast Music awards include "Village Tales" by Silk Road Music. Hugh Fraser; "Pas De Problem", Video Barbeque; "MAXIMALISM", June Katz - "Lulu's Back in Town", Saul Berson - "From Here To Beyond". His recording of "VEJI Now" made it to the Grammy short list in 1989; Juno nominations include: Sal Ferreras -'"Visible Minority", Lee Pui Ming - "Nine Fold Heart", Sumalao - "Encuentros", Hard Rubber Orchestra - "Cruel Yet Fair". Rick Kilburn has enjoyed a thirty-nine year career as a Jazz Bassist working with some of the greatest Jazz musicians on the planet. During this period he has played at many of the famous Jazz clubs in the US, Canada and Europe including the Village Vanguard, The Village Gate, Bradley's, Bottom Line, the Rainbow Room and the Blue Note in New York City. The Top of the Senator and the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. To name a few of the Concert venues that Rick has performed at : Avery Fisher Hall (Lincoln Center), Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Boston Symphony Hall, the Orpheum and Queen Elizabeth Theater in Vancouver. Guest appearances accompanying various Jazz groups performing in concert with Symphony Orchestras : Dave Brubeck Quartet with the Cincinnati Symphony, New Orleans Symphony, Ohio State Symphony, Joffrey Ballet with the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia, Southern Cross Quintet with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
